Hello, my name is Barbara and I translate from French to English and from English into Czech, my mother tongue.
I live between my hometown of Brno in the Czech Republic and Brest in Brittany.
When I was asked to give visitors to the website an anecdote about my country and my language, I immediately thought of a famous sentence by a Czech comedian in 1974: “Jáchyme, hoď ho do stroje! “. It’s a completely untranslatable sentence, or, as they say in the film, “a real headache for translators”, whose meaning is incomprehensible even in Czech! This sentence is: “Kolik třešní, tolik višní. ” (For every sweet cherry there’s a sour one).
If you have the translation for this sentence, I’d love to meet you!
